The first written set of team handball rules was published in 1906 by a Danish gym teacher and later revised into the modern version in 1917 in Germany. Under these new rules, the first international games were played in 1925 for men and in 1930 for women, the popularity of which inspired the creation of The International Handball Federation in 1946.

We grew up with stories of Fionn Mc Cool, Cuchulainn and other legendary heroes who, emerging from the Celtic twilight, would relax after their great deeds in battle and hunting by playing hurling (ariel hockey) and handball.
Handball in its present form developed in Europe in the 1920s from earlier games. The game, in its 11-man outdoor version, first appeared at the Olympics in 1936. It was subsequently dropped from the Olympics but returned as the 7-man indoor game in 1972. Women’s team handball became an Olympic sport in 1976.
